I love to watch TED Talks. If you’re not familiar with TED Talks, they’re videos of brief talks presented at TED (technology, entertainment, design) conferences in locations around the world.

TED Talks cover just about any topic you can imagine, and they tend to be very positive and inspiring. Sometimes when the TV news becomes too negative and discouraging, I’ll tune in to one of these talks instead.

If you ever hesitate to do an act of kindness because you don’t think your little action will make a difference, then you need to watch this TED Talk. It’s a story from a volunteer firefighter named Mark Bezos. Let me know what you think in the comment section!

Alzheimer's disease and vision

Did you know that Alzheimer’s disease can affect vision even if there’s nothing physically wrong with a person’s eyes? Sometimes residents do things that seem odd to us. But these actions often result from changes going on in parts of the brain that affect vision. Let’s look at a few of these common conditions.

Color & Contrast Perception

This makes it difficult for a person to see an object against a background of the same color. For example, a resident might have trouble recognizing a white toilet if the walls or the floor in the bathroom are also white.

wedding party visits nursing home

Since June is the most popular month for weddings, I hope brides and grooms out there will consider doing what this couple did. The entire wedding party chose to volunteer at a nursing home during the weekend of their bachelor & bachelorette parties. What an excellent way to start their life together by serving others!

Many years ago, I lived in a small town where nearly everyone had a relative living at the local nursing home. It was common for brides and grooms to stop by after their wedding to visit relatives who weren’t able to attend the ceremony.

When I was attending college, we could do a nursing internship between our junior and senior years. Two of my classmates and I arranged for an internship at a small hospital in northern Minnesota.

Since we would be there for only eight weeks, we knew it would be challenging to find a place to live for such a brief time. So when the director of nursing asked how we felt about staying at the nursing home adjoining the hospital, we gave it some consideration.

I’ll admit I had misgivings about living in the nursing home. Will we have much privacy? What will it be like to take our showers in the facility bathing room down the hall? Will the noises of the night shift disturb our sleep? If we eat our meals there will the food be any good?

breast cancer research studiesStatistics show that 40,450 women and 440 men will die of breast cancer this year (cancer.org). You’ve probably worked with people living with breast cancer at the nursing home.

Perhaps the diagnosis affects a family member or a friend, or even you. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could play a part in defeating this terrible disease?

I want to introduce you to an organization called Army of Women. Their goal is to promote ground-breaking research with a vision of ending breast cancer in our lifetime.

The best part? You can be a part of this army!
