Since June is the most popular month for weddings, I hope brides and grooms out there will consider doing what this couple did. Their entire wedding party joined them in volunteering at a nursing home during the weekend of their bachelor & bachelorette parties. What a wonderful way to start out their life together by serving others!
Several years ago I lived in a small town where nearly everyone had a relative living at the nursing home. It was common for brides and grooms to stop by after their wedding to visit relatives who weren’t able to attend the ceremony.
All of the residents enjoyed this, not just those who knew the couple. I still remember how their eyes lit up as they surveyed the beautiful bride in her gown and the handsome groom in his tux.
After they left, the couple’s visit spurred lots of conversation. We heard wonderful tales about proposals, old-time wedding traditions (Has anyone heard of a chivaree?), funny honeymoon stories, and advice on how to make a marriage last.
If you’re getting married this summer, I hope you consider stopping by a nursing home to share your special event with the residents. You just might make their day!
