Statistics show that 40,450 women and 440 men will die of breast cancer this year (cancer.org). You’ve probably worked with people living with breast cancer at the nursing home. Perhaps you’re personally affected by the diagnosis of a family member or friend or even yourself. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we can have a part in defeating this terrible disease?
I’d like to introduce you to an organization called “Army of Women”. Their goal is to promote ground-breaking research with a vision of ending breast cancer in our lifetime. The best part? You can be a part of this army!
Under the direction of Dr. Susan Love, the program recruits people for research projects all over the country. Depending on the study, volunteers can be cancer patients, healthy adults, cancer survivors, or people at high risk of developing breast cancer. (Yes, men are included, too!)
Some of the studies require participants to go to nearby universities or medical centers for testing (blood samples, exams, etc.). Others involve simple online questionnaires. The organization also sponsors fundraising programs, provides education on breast cancer, and helps link up cancer patients with clinical treatment trials.
So far, none of the onsite studies have been located near my home. However, I did have the opportunity to participate in an online study looking at health habits and risk factors. One of the things I appreciate most about this program is the fact that they provide webinars to let participants know the results of their studies when they are finished.
Check out the Army of Women website for more information, then take on the challenge to help defeat breast cancer!
