As I described in my recent post entitled “What To Expect In The New Year“, I’m noticing that many of the people who visit my blog aren’t volunteers. I’m hearing from nurses, activities professionals, family members, and a variety of other people associated with nursing homes.

Therefore, I’ve decided to include an occasional guest article on my blog. After all, many of you have stories and ideas that reach far beyond my areas of expertise. I know your input will be very helpful to my readers!

Two snowmen built as one of many fun winter activities.

Back in August, I wrote a post about 25 Fun Outdoor Autumn Activities, and it proved to be popular with my readers. So this year I’ll continue to share special activities for each of the four seasons.

In our part of the country (North Dakota), it’s downright frigid during much of the winter, and it simply isn’t safe to bring residents outdoors. But on those precious days when it’s not too cold, there are lots of options to get outside and enjoy the fresh, crisp air.

A few days ago, I came across a fascinating article shared by Nicole Phillips on Twitter. I’ll briefly summarize the story.

This true event recently took place at Severna Park United Methodist Church, near Baltimore. An anonymous donor gave the church a stack of $100 bills totaling $10,000. The donor invited each congregant to take a $100 bill and go out into the community and use the money to perform acts of kindness.

collecting coins as a fundraiser

Are you looking for ways to raise money for smaller projects at your nursing home? Then check out these fun methods for collecting pennies and other coins. You’ll be surprised by how much money you can collect through these simple strategies!

  • At the beginning of the year, pass out empty water bottles to staff and volunteers. Ask them to drop in their spare change at the end of each day and return the bottle to you when it’s full.
  • Ask if you can put coin canisters in area businesses. Post a sign letting customers know about the project the money will go toward. This works best if it’s a business where people often pay with cash (such as a coffee shop). Unfortunately, you do need to be concerned about the possible theft of your canisters. Be sure to secure them to the counter and have a specific person designated to empty them frequently.

What an amazing year this has been! After several months of soul-searching over whether or not I should delve into the world of blogging, I hit the “publish” button on NursingHomeVolunteer.com on June 2, 2017.

Here’s how this new adventure is impacting my world:

  • As someone who has never been very computer savvy, starting a blog proved quite challenging. There were times when I was knee-deep in frustration over the technical aspects of blogging, and I felt like throwing my computer into the wastebasket. Fortunately, this was followed by incredible relief and excitement when everything fell into place, and I finally figured it all out.
