The other day, a reader asked for fundraising ideas for a specific purpose. The residents of her assisted living community want to raise money to help support the people of Ukraine.

I love that question, and here’s why. When the current war in Ukraine began in February, we all took notice and looked for ways to help the Ukrainian people. Now months have passed, and sadly, the war is becoming “old news”.

If you’ve been with my blog for a while, you know that I’ve been doing a variety of at-home volunteer projects while undergoing cancer treatment. I’m sharing these projects because they’re also perfect to do with the residents of your senior care communities. Or you can do them as an individual or with your family. (For my newer readers, you can still catch up on my January, March, and May projects.)

This month, I’ve been working on what has become my two favorite at-home volunteer projects. The first is decorating lunch bags for Meals On Wheels. (You can read about my personal experience as a recipient of meals in this post from last year.)

Did you know the United States hosts two nursing homes providing care for retired actors? Let’s take a look at them.

Actors Fund Home

Originally opened on Staten Island in 1902, the Actors Fund Home later moved to Englewood, New Jersey, where it still exists today.

A group created in 1882, known as the Entertainment Community Fund, developed the home. As a nonprofit organization, the group helps support retired people in the performing arts and entertainment professions.

Here’s a fun little-known holiday to add to your July calendar. It’s National Mutt Day, and we celebrate it every year on July 31. Created to draw attention to mixed-breed dogs (mutts), I say it’s a day to celebrate all types of dogs.

Do you celebrate National Mutt Day in your senior living community? Please add your suggestions in the comment section!
