Statistics show that 40,450 women and 440 men will die of breast cancer this year (cancer.org). You’ve probably worked with people living with breast cancer at the nursing home.
Perhaps the diagnosis affects a family member or a friend, or even you. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could play a part in defeating this terrible disease?
I want to introduce you to an organization called Army of Women. Their goal is to promote ground-breaking research with a vision of ending breast cancer in our lifetime.
The best part? You can be a part of this army!
Under the direction of Dr. Susan Love, the program recruits people for research projects all over the country. Depending on the study, volunteers might be cancer patients, healthy adults, cancer survivors, or people at high risk of developing breast cancer. (Yes, this includes men, too!)
Some studies require participants to go to nearby universities or medical centers for testing (blood samples, exams, etc.). Others involve simple online questionnaires. The organization also sponsors fundraising programs, provides education on breast cancer, and helps link up cancer patients with clinical treatment trials.
So far, I’ve found no onsite studies near my home. However, I took part in an online survey looking at health habits and risk factors.
One thing I appreciate most about this program is their follow-up. Often, they provide webinars to let participants know the results of the studies after completion.
Check out the Army of Women website for more information, then take on the challenge to help defeat breast cancer! (You’ll also want to read this article to learn how you can help win the war against several other common diseases.)
