In my recent article about celebrating National Potato Day, I included a few ways to get staff involved in celebrating this little-known holiday. A reader responded by sharing a frustration.

This reader said she works hard to plan activities at her nursing home that include staff participation. But it’s like pulling teeth to get staff interested and involved.

I understand her concern, as we faced the same challenge at a few of my former workplaces. While I don’t have a perfect solution, I know these ten tips will help.

This month, I’ve added a new adventure to my cancer journey. I’m adjusting to the chemotherapy side effect of hair loss.

Why am I sharing this? Because I’ve learned a few lessons about being bald, and I’m hoping we can use these lessons to better support our residents who lose their hair during cancer treatments.

My experience

The nurse educator told me I might or might not lose my hair during chemo. So, I crossed my fingers and hoped this wouldn’t happen to me.

When I volunteered at the nursing home, they always provided transportation for residents to attend clinic appointments. However, they also required that a family member or friend accompany the resident throughout the appointment. On those rare occasions when the resident had no one to help, the nursing home looked to us as volunteers to accompany them.

Now, as a cancer patient, I’m the one who often needs an escort to appointments. I’ve learned a few lessons along the way, and I hope my experiences will help all of us to provide better support for our residents when they need to visit a clinic.

The past month brought a mind-boggling array of tests, procedures, and consultations as I’ve faced my new cancer diagnosis. I started chemo, and I’m finally reaching the point where my life’s schedule is settling into a new normal.

I believe every challenge we face in life is an opportunity to learn new lessons. So, as I maneuver this new journey, I plan to look for those lessons and see how we might use them to better support our nursing home residents.

While everyone’s cancer journey is different, these are four lessons I’ve learned so far:

communicating with people who live with dementia

Recently, an acquaintance asked for tips on communicating with residents who live with dementia. This individual floated to a wing where she rarely works at the nursing home, and she had questions about how to communicate effectively when a resident experiences confusion.

As I spoke with her, I realized that I’ve never specifically addressed this important topic in any of the over 400 articles I’ve posted on my blog. Yet, I should have, because many people struggle with the unique challenges of communicating with people living with dementia.

Today I’m sharing ten communication techniques I’ve found helpful over the years. I would love to see you add your tips in the comment section.
