When I was attending college, we could do a nursing internship between our junior and senior years. Two of my classmates and I arranged for an internship at a small hospital in northern Minnesota.

Since we would be there for only eight weeks, we knew it would be challenging to find a place to live for such a brief time. So when the director of nursing asked how we felt about staying at the nursing home adjoining the hospital, we gave it some consideration.

I’ll admit I had misgivings about living in the nursing home. Will we have much privacy? What will it be like to take our showers in the facility bathing room down the hall? Will the noises of the night shift disturb our sleep? If we eat our meals there will the food be any good?

breast cancer research studiesStatistics show that 40,450 women and 440 men will die of breast cancer this year (cancer.org). You’ve probably worked with people living with breast cancer at the nursing home.

Perhaps the diagnosis affects a family member or a friend, or even you. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could play a part in defeating this terrible disease?

I want to introduce you to an organization called Army of Women. Their goal is to promote ground-breaking research with a vision of ending breast cancer in our lifetime.

The best part? You can be a part of this army!

nursing home service projects

Do you ever think about how often nursing home residents receive care from other people? Yet they rarely get opportunities to give back.

For this reason, we look for activities that include a “giving” component. One option is to send expired coupons to troops serving overseas.

You might not know that overseas commissaries accept manufacturer coupons that expired up to 6 months ago. (Note that this only applies to overseas sites, not commissaries within the United States.)

Overseas military bases don’t have easy access to coupons like we do here in the states. That’s unfortunate because coupons offer substantial money savings for individuals and military families.
