Animals have been living at our nursing home for many years. Our littlest residents included dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, gerbils, fish, and even chinchillas. A group of employees and volunteers care for each type of animal. Several years ago, I was on the rabbit team. We made sure the two bunnies had food & water, brought them outside to play, and cleaned their cages.

One of our residents (I’ll call her Mary) grew very fond of one rabbit (I’ll call him Charlie). Mary’s room was right across the hall from Charlie’s cage. She spent many hours talking to him, petting him, and feeding him treats. Whenever I cleaned Charlie’s cage, Mary always appeared out of nowhere to supervise and to make sure I did everything correctly.

cooking activities for nursing home residents

Does it ever seem like health department regulations take some fun out of activities involving cooking or baking? While these rules are necessary to help prevent food-borne illness, the gloves and hairnets don’t feel like home. I find this especially true in our memory care unit.

We’ve discovered a few fun cooking activities to get around these regulations. One of our favorites is making dog treats to send home for employees’ pets. While we’ve tried several recipes, this one is always the favorite:

lesson from a firefighter

I love to watch TED Talks. If you’re not familiar with TED Talks, they’re videos of brief talks presented at TED (technology, entertainment, design) conferences in locations around the world.

TED Talks cover just about any topic you can imagine, and they tend to be very positive and inspiring. Sometimes when the TV news becomes too negative and discouraging, I’ll tune in to one of these talks instead.

If you ever hesitate to do an act of kindness because you don’t think your little action will make a difference, then you need to watch this TED Talk. It’s a story from a volunteer firefighter named Mark Bezos. Let me know what you think in the comment section!

Alzheimer's disease and vision

Did you know that Alzheimer’s disease can affect vision even if there’s nothing physically wrong with a person’s eyes? Sometimes residents do things that seem odd to us. But these actions often result from changes going on in parts of the brain that affect vision. Let’s look at a few of these common conditions.

Color & Contrast Perception

This makes it difficult for a person to see an object against a background of the same color. For example, a resident might have trouble recognizing a white toilet if the walls or the floor in the bathroom are also white.

wedding party visits nursing home

Since June is the most popular month for weddings, I hope brides and grooms out there will consider doing what this couple did. The entire wedding party chose to volunteer at a nursing home during the weekend of their bachelor & bachelorette parties. What an excellent way to start their life together by serving others!

Many years ago, I lived in a small town where nearly everyone had a relative living at the local nursing home. It was common for brides and grooms to stop by after their wedding to visit relatives who weren’t able to attend the ceremony.
