how to host a chili fundraiser

During these long, snowy days of winter, there’s nothing like a big bowl of hot chili to warm the heart. That’s why a chili feed is a terrific fundraiser at this time of year. Another option is to schedule your event for February 22 since this is National Chili Day!

Here’s how:

  • Get your volunteers together and prepare several crockpots of chili using a variety of recipes. You’ll find a few of our favorites at the end of this post.
  • I suggest you serve primarily traditional chili, but it’s also fun to add a few specialty recipes. There are lots of options: no-bean, vegetarian, chicken, fiery hot, or venison.
  • Provide a variety of toppings such as shredded cheese, sour cream, diced onion, and crushed tortilla chips. We find it works best to have volunteers measure out the toppings for each person, as some guests are overly generous when piling on their toppings. This helps prevent running out of toppings, and it also assures your event is a good fundraiser.

facts about influenza

Last week I went to the nursing home to do manicures for residents in the memory care unit. When I arrived, a sign on the door announced the start of special precautions to help prevent the spread of influenza.

It’s scary to hear about the widespread cases of the flu around the country this year. But there are measures we can take to protect ourselves and our residents. Check out these 6 fascinating facts from the Centers for Disease Control:

  • People with the flu can spread it to others who are as much as 6 feet away. Flu viruses are primarily spread by droplets created when people with influenza cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or they can be inhaled into the lungs.

Important Update For My Readers

I’m sure many of you noticed that I increased the frequency of my blog posts this month. In the past, I’ve always posted an article about every 3 days. This month I upped it to every other day.

Well, I must admit that researching and writing a new blog post 15 times a month is proving to be a bit too time-consuming for me. As a result, I feel a need to go back to posting a new article every 3 days. However, I’m working on something new that I believe will be even more helpful to you, my readers.

Beginning in February, I’ll create a weekly newsletter. I’m excited about this for several reasons:

Straight Talk About Bladder Control: Part 3

bladder incontinence in the nursing home

I’m glad you’re joining me for the third and final article in a series on bladder control problems. Today we’ll focus on long-term care residents who experience incontinence.

While bladder incontinence is very common in the long-term care setting, it’s often preventable and treatable. Just like anyone else, our residents deserve a thorough evaluation and treatment of their bladder control concerns. This needs to be a multi-disciplinary approach with input from the resident and/or their decision-maker. Together, you’ll develop an individualized plan of care. Residents also deserve the opportunity to see a urologist, geriatrician, specially trained physical therapist, or gynecologist to evaluate and treat the underlying cause of incontinence.

Now let’s look at the 4 major types of bladder incontinence affecting long-term care residents and what we can do to help. I hope you’ll refer to my previous articles for more information about the definitions and possible causes & treatments of these conditions.

Why You Should Collect Box Tops For Education

why collect Box Tops For Education

Important Update: Box Tops For Education recently stopped using physical coupons. However, you can still take part in the program by uploading digital product codes through their app. I hope you’ll continue to support your local schools through the Box Tops For Education program. Unfortunately, our nursing home residents can no longer collect and clip the physical box tops.

As I’ve mentioned before, we’re always on the lookout for experiences that allow our residents to help others. Residents are always receiving care, yet they rarely get a chance to be the givers. That’s why I encourage you to offer your residents the opportunity to take part in the Box Tops For Education program.
