When you think about a teddy bear picnic, you usually think about children, right? Well, did you know that lots of nursing homes around the country celebrate this special day on July 10?

These are a few activities that I know your residents will enjoy. Please add your suggestions in the comment section!

Host a Show & Tell

I’m sure a lot of your residents have teddy bears they’ve owned for many years or even decades. Host a Show & Tell event and ask residents to share stories and memories about their bears.

The annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s is just around the corner. Is your team ready? (Check out my previous post for lots of ideas on how to recruit team members!)

The Alzheimer’s Association sponsors this walk in communities all across the USA on a variety of dates between August and November. With a distance of 2-3 miles, people of all ages and abilities participate. You can find a walk near you through the search bar on their website.

While there is no registration fee, individuals and teams raise donations to help support the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association:

Would Your Dog Make A Good Therapy Dog?

Do you ever wonder if your dog would make a good nursing home therapy dog? Perhaps you’ve considered this possibility after watching the heartwarming responses from residents when they see a dog in the nursing home.

While I’m a strong advocate for pets living onsite in nursing homes, visits from therapy dogs are also very beneficial to residents. These benefits include:

  • entertainment
  • companionship
  • increased self-esteem
  • physical touch
  • unconditional acceptance
  • socialization
  • increased physical activity
  • lessening of depression
  • reduction in anxiety

Each month I do a lot of research to discover the best fundraising ideas to share with my readers. In the process, I’m always amazed by the unique and creative events nursing homes come up with to raise money to benefit their residents.

Today I’m sharing a few of the more unusual fundraising ideas I’ve come across. I’ll also post a link to each organization so you can contact them directly if you want more information.

It seems early in the year to be talking about Christmas, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not if you’re familiar with Operation Christmas Child. Many long-term care facilities around the world pack shoeboxes for this wonderful program.

Recently, I’ve noticed a significant increase in the number of clicks on blog posts I’ve written about Operation Christmas Child in the past. This tells me that people are already thinking about and planning for this year’s shoebox project.
