The past month has been another roller coaster on my cancer journey. As has happened in the past, my treatments work for a while, and then I run into complications. After lab tests, a PET scan, another biopsy, and visits with my oncologist, I started yet another new medication regimen last Friday.

Because of the ups and downs of my cancer and the related treatments, I haven’t been able to work since March 2021. (For those of you who are new to my blog, I’m an RN by trade, and I also love to serve as a volunteer at nursing homes. My diagnosis has put both roles on hold.)

Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. I know it’s been quite a while since I’ve posted an update. That’s because things have been pretty stable over the past few months. Cancer has become more like a chronic condition for me rather than an acute illness.

When I was first diagnosed, I told you I would look for lessons to be learned from cancer and share them with you. If you click on the “cancer journey” tab on my blog, you can read about some of those lessons.

Today I’ll share another lesson, hoping my thoughts will help you support a friend, family member, or one of your nursing home residents living with a chronic illness.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how different the holidays will be this year because of my cancer diagnosis. These thoughts prompted me to come up with a list of ways you can support a friend undergoing cancer treatment, whether they live in a senior living community or a private home.

As you read my advice, keep in mind that everyone’s experience with cancer is different. Offer suggestions, then encourage your friend to let you know how you can best support them.

But, first, an update. The good news is that the worst of my cancer treatment is behind me. I now need to go to the oncology clinic just once a month for lab work, an exam, and medications.

Many of you know how much I love to collect quotes. I’m also finding them to be very popular among my blog readers.

Check out this quote:

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive—to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” (Marcus Aurelius)

A year ago, I would have thought this was a lovely quote. But, otherwise, it wouldn’t have held any special meaning for me. Today I find great beauty in the quote, and here’s why.

3 More Lessons Taught By Cancer

As I approach the seventh month since being diagnosed with cancer, I’ll take a break from my usual topics and share an update on my cancer journey. I’m also sharing three more important lessons I’ve learned along the way.

This past week brought an unexpected trip to surgery after I developed a staph infection in my chemo port. The port had to be removed, but that was okay because I’m no longer using it. You see, I had to stop receiving IV chemotherapy because it caused too much damage to my bone marrow. I’m on a new medication regimen now, and aside from the infection, overall the new plan has been going well.

On a happier note, my hair is growing back. After four months of baldness, I’m excited at the prospect of having a full head of hair. (Ok, maybe not so much excitement about needing to shave my legs again!)
