Recently, I asked my newsletter subscribers to suggest topics to feature on my blog. One reader requested that I share more personal stories—especially funny nursing home stories.
I love that idea! But here’s the thing. I remember a lot of laughter during my many years of working or volunteering at nursing homes. Yet, I can’t recall a lot of specific stories. In hindsight, I really wish I had written them down.
So, here’s where I need your help. Today I’ll share one funny story. But then I would love it if you would also share your humorous stories with my readers.
Simply send your story to NursingHomeVolunteer@gmail.com to have it considered for publication. (Of course, I won’t post anything that’s distasteful or might display our elders in a poor light.)
Okay, here’s my story:
At one time, I volunteered on a memory care unit where part of my assignment was to escort residents off the unit to play Bingo. I usually accompanied three ladies who had played Bingo for many decades and loved the game.
These ladies were fairly independent in playing, but now and then they needed help to find a number. I always gave each of the ladies two cards, which was the standard number that all the other residents used. Then I would play on just one card, so I could keep an eye on my residents’ cards and help them as needed.
On this particular evening, one of my ladies (Clara) asked me why I was only playing on one Bingo card. I simply told her it was easier for me to play with just one card. Then Clara patted my hand and sweetly said, “You go ahead and take another card. I’m here to help you if you’re having trouble keeping up.”
Now it’s your turn! I look forward to reading your funny nursing home stories and sharing them on my blog.
Also, if you’re looking for ways to infuse laughter into your daily nursing home routine, then you’ll enjoy this article!
