Most of you know I’ve been battling metastatic breast cancer for nearly two years. Earlier this week, we received the shocking news that my sister also has breast cancer. Linda is one year older than me and my only sibling.
The main reason this came as such a shock is that I had genetic testing done after my diagnosis. They looked at genes for over 100 types of cancer, and not a single one showed a mutation that would put me (or my family) at an increased risk for cancer. While statistics show one in eight women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, I never in a million years imagined it would strike both my sister and me.
My sister is in the very early stages of diagnostic testing, and she doesn’t yet have a treatment plan. It breaks my heart to think that she might need to go through the same difficult treatments and side effects I’ve experienced.
Since my diagnosis, I’ve tried to keep you, my readers, updated on my cancer journey. I’m looking for lessons I’ve learned along the way, hoping my experiences will help you support your residents and others going through cancer treatment. You can find my story on the cancer journey tab of my blog.
Several of you told me you’ve prayed for me over the past two years. This means the world to me, and I know prayer makes a difference. So, today I’m asking that you also add my sister to your prayers. Thank you so much!
