I’m so excited about a new feature you’ll see on my blog beginning in September. One of the best ways we can enhance the lives of our nursing home residents is by sharing our outstanding ideas.

As I search the Internet for possible topics for my blog, I often come across wonderful things that are happening at individual nursing homes. Many of these ideas have such a positive impact on the lives of residents. But sometimes I wonder if people in other parts of the country (or world) know about these great ideas. We need to spread the word!

How to organize a blood drive

Check out these surprising facts from the American Red Cross:

  • Less than 10% of the population eligible to donate blood does so annually.
  • Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.
  • Each pint of blood donated can save more than one life.
  • Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.
  • We cannot manufacture blood. It only comes from generous donors.

fun activities for seniors

As I explain in my previous post, sometimes it’s challenging to comply with food safety regulations when residents make food other people will eat. For this reason, baking mug cakes is a terrific activity. It’s easy to measure out the ingredients in advance, so each resident only handles the food they’ll eat themselves.

Activities that include baking are helpful to residents because they trigger memories and lead to reminiscing. They also use various senses, such as sight, smell, and taste. The scent of freshly baked food enhances the appetite, and residents feel a sense of accomplishment in the finished product.

Operation Christmas Child boxes

As I point out in my post about coupons for the military, our residents enjoy activities that involve giving to others. That’s why I encourage you to offer your residents the opportunity to take part in Operation Christmas Child.

Here’s what Operation Christmas Child is all about as quoted from their website:

Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, demonstrates God’s love in a tangible way to needy children around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, shares the Good News of Jesus Christ. We collect and send simple shoebox gifts filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items to children affected by war, poverty, disaster, famine, and disease. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has delivered more than 146 million shoebox gifts to children in more than 160 countries and territories.

memory cafes

A new type of cafe is springing up across the country. Memory Cafes (sometimes called dementia-friendly cafes) are places where people living with dementia and their caregivers/companions get together to support each other.

The cafe can be a coffee shop, restaurant, library, community center, or another public meeting place. Participants meet weekly, monthly, or whatever works best for the group. Besides Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, some cafes are expanding to include those living with traumatic brain injuries.
