soup fundraiser

I’m glad to hear many of you are enjoying the fundraising ideas featured on my blog! Now that the cooler days of autumn are upon us, I’ll share how to host a Soup Day fundraiser.

Our nursing home doesn’t have a cafe where the staff can buy meals. So, a few times during the colder months of the year, we host a Soup Day.

This allows staff to purchase a bowl of hot, delicious soup as an alternative to bringing their bag lunches. In addition, the money we raise helps support some of our smaller projects at the nursing home.

It takes just a few simple steps to create a successful Soup Day:

nursing home fashion show

Several years ago, we held a fashion show at our nursing home. A local clothing store provided prom apparel, and our residents were the models.

It was so much fun! The residents loved getting all dolled up for the event, and it was clear how much they enjoyed being in the limelight for the afternoon. Today I’ll share tips for making your fashion show a success.

  • If you recruit residents as models, make it even more fun by inviting someone from a modeling agency to come in the day before to offer tips on how to work the runway. You can often find students from local cosmetology schools who will volunteer to do the residents’ hair and makeup for the event.

World Alzheimer's DayToday, September 21, is designated as World Alzheimer’s Day. This day was established in 1994, and the theme for this year is “Remember Me”. Please take a few extra moments today to cherish the memory of loved ones who lived with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

I hope you’ll also watch this touching video that honors famous people who have lived with Alzheimer’s disease. Many of these people increased our understanding of the disease and helped reduce the stigma associated with a dementia diagnosis.

history of nursing homes

Did you know that today’s nursing homes trace their history back to the days of poor houses in the 18th century? We’ve come a long way! I hope you enjoy reading these highlights in the history of U.S. nursing homes.

Before the 1800s

Families generally took responsibility for the care of elderly relatives who could no longer fend for themselves. Wealthy older people with no family help ended up hiring servants to provide care. But elders with no family and no means of support lived in poor houses (also known as almshouses).
