Do you find it challenging to come up with interesting activities for your male residents? Science experiments are always a big hit at our nursing home.

That’s why it’s great fun to celebrate National Baking Soda Day. There are so many cool experiments you can do with baking soda. This is also a perfect opportunity to invite children to join your residents for a project.

We celebrate National Baking Soda Day on January 30 in honor of the French chemist, Nicolas Leblanc, who produced baking soda for the first time in 1791. (Some sources list National Baking Soda Day as December 30 or January 3. However, with so many other activities going on around the holidays, I prefer to celebrate on January 30.)

Nowadays, every day is a national holiday. We designate specific days to celebrate everything from pizza to country music to frogs. Some days are quite cheesy (like National Cheese Puff Day on March 5), while others are patriotic or educational. Whatever the case may be, national holidays offer a wonderful array of ideas for nursing home activities.

This week I’ll share activity suggestions for two special days in January. The first is National Milk Day on January 11. We celebrate this holiday in honor of the first day glass-bottled milk was delivered to American homes in 1878.

How To Save A Life

bone marrow donationDid you know that thousands of people are currently waiting for a bone marrow transplant to save their lives? And did you know that only about 50% will ever find that match?

You can help save one of these lives by hosting a donor drive at your nursing home in 2018. If that’s not possible, please consider adding your name to the marrow donor registry. Here’s what you need to know:

Who can donate marrow?

The ideal age is 18-44 as this assures the greatest chance of transplant success. Many people believe that the criteria for donating marrow are the same as for donating blood, but this isn’t true. Even if you’ve been declined as a blood donor in the past, you may still be able to donate marrow. You do need to be in good health to donate marrow, so there are medical conditions that may restrict you from donating.

State Inspections: What Volunteers Need To Know

nursing home surveys

I clearly remember my introduction to the state nursing home survey (inspection) back when I was a brand new nursing assistant:

  • Panicked whispers of “surveyors just walked in” spreading through the building like wildfire.
  • Poker-faced surveyors lurking in the hallways and writing mysterious notes on their clipboards.
  • Deer-in-the-headlights expressions on the faces of staff corned by surveyors and peppered with questions.
  • Nursing assistants scattering into residents’ rooms, hoping they wouldn’t be one of the unfortunate souls selected to be watched while bathing a resident.
  • Managers praying that they would be far, far away on vacation during the week the surveyors appeared.

Understanding The Dying Process

understanding the dying process

Every year, several of our long-term residents pass away over the holidays. Have you noticed this happening at your nursing home, too? I wondered why so many elderly people die during the Christmas season, so I did a bit of research.

Several studies indicate that the most common time for adults to die of natural causes is over the 2 weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Day. A few theories exist as to the reason, but nobody knows for sure why this happens.

As a volunteer, you may be called upon to spend time with a resident who is in the dying process. If you’ve never before seen a person who is dying, the symptoms can be unsettling. You’ll provide better support for the resident when you understand what’s happening during these normal end-of-life changes.
