Thanks for joining me for the second of a 3-part series addressing the important issue of bladder control problems. I hope you had an opportunity to read the first post, but if not, you can check it out here. You’ll find it helpful to review the types of incontinence noted in my previous article before we move on to today’s topics.

As we talk about causes and treatments, I want to stress the importance of consulting your primary medical provider about any bladder control issues. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. I assure you that you won’t shock your physician; they see this all the time.

nursing home activities for Weatherperson's Day

I hope you’re enjoying our monthly series of activities to celebrate little-known national holidays. (In case you missed the activities for January, you can check them out here and here.)

Today I’m sharing ideas for National Weatherperson’s Day on February 5. On this day we celebrate the birthday of Dr. John Jeffries who is considered one of America’s first weather observers. He started recording daily weather information in 1774. This day also recognizes all professionals who forecast and broadcast the weather today.

Here’s how your residents can enjoy National Weatherperson’s Day:

host a memory screening event

As we get older, it’s not unusual to experience minor memory lapses. But how do we know what’s normal and what’s cause for concern? This question causes a lot of worries, especially when we hear about so many people being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America provides a great service to help provide answers to these concerns. Its National Memory Screening Program offers free, confidential memory screenings at sites throughout the country. Will you consider hosting a memory screening at your facility? Here’s what you need to know to get started:

bladder incontinence in the nursing home

Welcome to my 3-part series about bladder control! Why am I spending so much time on this sensitive subject? Because one of my pet peeves is how easily our society accepts incontinence as a normal part of life.

We rarely turn on the TV without seeing at least one commercial touting the benefits of disposable pads and briefs for bladder leakage. Thank goodness these products are available, but two important steps are missing. What’s causing the loss of bladder control, and what can we do to make it better?

Today I’ll review the types of incontinence and a few steps you can take to help maintain normal bladder control. Next week, I’ll discuss the causes of incontinence and treatment options. Finally, we’ll talk about strategies to address incontinence in the nursing home.

encouraging nursing home activity participation

You just poured a ton of time and enthusiasm into planning what you believe is a terrific activity for your residents. Then hardly anybody shows up. Where did you go wrong? Check out these eight tips for boosting activity participation at your nursing home:

  • Plan a series of activities centered on a theme.

Let’s say your theme is gardening. You might have a guest speaker one day, a trip to a garden center the next day, and a hands-on gardening project the following day. After residents take part in one activity, they look forward to what’s coming next.
