How To Play Bingo As A Fundraiser

BINGO nursing home fundraiser

I think bingo is the perfect nursing home fundraiser. Why? Because if the residents at your facility play bingo, then you already own the supplies and equipment you need. Simply invite your staff and their families and friends to come in for an evening of food and fun while supporting a great cause.

Before we continue, I have one important word of warning. Some localities consider a bingo fundraiser to be charitable gaming. Be sure to check local and state laws before you commit to this activity.

Pick the right date

We’ve made the mistake of scheduling a fundraiser on the same day as another big community event, so hardly anyone showed up for ours. Check with staff and review community calendars to assure there are no major conflicts.

How to Get Mobility Equipment in Nursing Homes

February 21, 2018 by Scott Grant 12 Comments

Guest post by Scott Grant, ATP, CRTS

It isn’t at all uncommon. Most seniors in nursing homes need some sort of mobility aid to help them recover from their injury. Unfortunately, the need for this equipment sometimes becomes permanent. But, do you know who pays for this equipment while your loved one is in the nursing home? The answer may surprise you. Here is a spoiler: make friends with the therapy department!

Paying for Equipment in Long Term Care

I frequently work with patients and their families in long term care as a custom wheelchair specialist. It almost always surprises them when they find out that their insurance is not going to pay for their grandmother’s new rollator that she needs.

nursing home activities for World Water Day

Today I’m introducing another excellent national holiday to celebrate with your residents. World Water Day was initiated in 1993 to promote awareness of the importance of water and the need for conservation.

Check out these fun activities to celebrate the day. Please feel free to add your suggestions in the comment section.

Strike Up A Conversation

  • Reminisce about water-related weather events your residents remember such as floods, hurricanes, or droughts.
  • Ask residents to brainstorm ways to conserve water. (Turn off the water while brushing teeth, etc.)
  • Play a trivia game with these fun water facts.
  • Solve a word scramble with words related to water.

Caring For The Caregiver Next Door

how to support caregivers

Today I’m sharing an adaptation of an article I wrote for SixtyandMe. I hope you’ll consider joining this dynamic community of women embracing life after age 60.

How well do you know your neighbors? According to the National Alliance For Caregiving, 34.2 million Americans provided unpaid care to an adult age 50 or older in the last 12 months. The NAFC also reports that the average family caregiver spends 24.4 hours per week providing care. That’s a lot of time on top of their many other responsibilities. So chances are good that someone in your neighborhood is a caregiver and could use some extra care themselves.

I trust you’ll find these 6 tips helpful as you care for the caregivers in your neighborhood.

nursing home activities for plant a flower day

I don’t know about you, but March is always a loooong month for me. The cold and colorless days of winter lose their charm, and I long for the sunny, colorful days of summer. For this reason, I think National Plant A Flower Day is the perfect holiday to celebrate with your residents at this time of year.

Here are some ideas to get you started. Please add your suggestions in the comment section!

Spark A Lively Discussion

  • Look through seed catalogs and reminisce about your residents’ flower gardens of the past. (If you request catalogs now, they should reach you by March 12.)
