free online classes for healthcare staff

Have you ever experienced a MOOC? Perhaps you’re thinking, “What on earth is a MOOC?”

MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course. It’s a class that anyone can access from anywhere in the world as long as they have Internet service. Many MOOCs are affiliated with top universities. Besides, they offer high-quality education on an amazing variety of topics.

While most MOOCs are free, there is often an optional fee you can pay if you wish to receive a certificate or college credit for the course. But if you prefer to take a class simply for the fun of learning something new, then you need not pay a cent.

how to ask for donations

Someone just asked you to approach businesses about donating door prizes for an upcoming event at your facility. Are you excited? Or perhaps you would prefer to make an appointment to go to the dentist? Most people feel intimidated by the thought of asking for donations, but it need not be this way.

As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, you usually see better attendance at your fundraising events if you give the attendees something in return. However, you don’t want to spend your precious funds on door prizes and gift baskets. That’s why it’s so essential to solicit these items from outside sources. Today I want to share tips I’ve learned from many years of helping with fundraising events at our nursing home.

missing items in nursing homes

The other day I came upon a post on LinkedIn about missing items in nursing homes. The author of the post expressed great frustration over this problem. As I scrolled down and read the comments, I saw many people spewing angry words about lost clothing, hearing aids, dentures, jewelry, and eyeglasses.

Interestingly, it was obvious that this is not just a problem here in the United States. People from Australia, Canada, and Great Britain voiced similar concerns.

I can’t blame people for being upset when something goes missing. Hearing aids often cost thousands of dollars to replace. Even worse, many residents with cognitive losses can’t handle the exams necessary to get new dentures or a new prescription for eyeglasses.

donating airline miles

According to a recent LA Times article, at least 15% of all airline reward miles expire without being used. Airlines issue billions of dollars worth of reward miles each year in the U.S. Consequently, this means that an enormous amount of money goes to waste.

I know how easy it is to let airline rewards expire. I’m guilty of doing that myself a few years ago. At the time, it never occurred to me that a wonderful option is to donate unused miles to charity.

Today I’ll let you know about several charities that are thrilled to receive your unused miles. Before we begin, consider these three important factors:

students live in nursing homes

Let’s say you’re allowed to check yourself into a nursing home to see what it feels like to be a resident. Would you do it? A few universities offer students this option in what they call nursing home immersion.

Probably the most well-known program is at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Here, students admit themselves to a nursing home and live there for 10-14 days. Each student receives fictitious diagnoses and disabilities.

All nursing home staff know that the students aren’t real residents. However, they must treat them just like any other resident. The nursing home receives no reimbursement for caring for these extra people.
