Earlier this week, I shared ideas to help your residents to celebrate National Cheese Day on June 4. Today we’ll look at lots of fun activity options for another important holiday in June: National Smile Power Day on June 15.

What makes you smile?

Tape a large poster board to a wall and add a few smiley faces. Invite residents, staff, families, and volunteers to write down what makes them smile. Answers could include grandchildren, a favorite pet, sunny weather, and tons of other topics.

This week I’m sharing ideas to help your residents celebrate two little known holidays in June. Today we’ll talk about National Cheese Day (June 4), and on Saturday we’ll take a look at National Smile Power Day (June 15).

What’s that you say? You already celebrated National Cheese Lover’s Day in January? Yes, there is some duplication on national holiday calendars. But, that’s okay. In my opinion, you can never experience too much cheese.

Each month, I like to share an opportunity that helps you expand your reach as a volunteer. Today, let’s look at the role of the parish nurse (also called a faith community nurse) in the long-term care setting.

What is a Parish Nurse?

According to NCF, parish nursing is defined as, “With a focus on intentional care of the spirit, they assist members of the faith community to maintain or regain wholeness in body, mind, and spirit”.

Most parish nurses work in conjunction with a church, although some are employed by health care facilities or social service agencies. Many parish nurses receive a salary while others volunteer their services.

We’re celebrating at our house this week! My daughter, Sarah, passed her national boards and will soon begin her career as a physical therapist. I’m so proud of her, and I’m excited to see what lies ahead as she goes out into the world to serve others.

Wouldn’t it be fun if your volunteer group had lots of money to spend? Then you could purchase oodles of special items to enhance the lives of your residents.

A favorite fundraiser at our nursing home is the yard sale we’ve organized annually for many years. We use the money to purchase items to benefit our residents such as mobility equipment, furniture, landscaping items, and bathing supplies.

With the coming of spring, I’m beginning to see yard sale signs popping up around our neighborhood. So, it seems like a perfect time to re-post this popular article from last year.
