supporting nursing home residents who are dying

Several months ago, I published a post about Understanding the Dying Process in which I mentioned a program at our nursing home called Garden Angels. A reader recently asked for more details about our program, and I’m happy to share that information with you today.

Someone at our nursing home came up with the name Garden Angels several years ago, but there are similar programs across the country. We are simply a group of volunteers who keep vigil at the bedside of residents who are actively dying.

We hope that a dying resident will always have a family member or friend at their bedside when they leave this life. However, this is not always possible.

adapting nursing home activities for memory care

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you know that I post activity ideas at least a couple of times each month. Recently, I received a question from a nursing home volunteer. He asked if I can provide more information about how to adapt activities for residents living in memory care units.

I believe nearly any activity is adaptable for people living with dementia. How to do this depends upon the interests and abilities of the individual resident. With this in mind, I decided to share a few general principals for creating memory care activities.

how to host a used book sale

Each month I like to post a fundraising idea to help you raise money for special projects at your nursing home. This month let’s look at a used book sale.

Even though you probably won’t raise an enormous amount of money with this sale, I think it’s still a good fundraiser because it costs you absolutely nothing. Since all of the books are donated, every cent of the profit is yours to keep.

Sounds easy, right? In general, this is an easy event to organize. That being said, I’ve discovered several tips to make a book sale more profitable and enjoyable.

help nursing home residents sleep better

We all know what we feel like after spending a sleepless night tossing and turning in our beds. The next day we feel grumpy, groggy, unproductive, and maybe even a bit confused. So imagine what it’s like for a nursing home resident who sleeps poorly night after night. Today let’s look at some of the causes of insomnia and how we can help our residents enjoy healthy sleep.

Noises in the night

One of my roles as a volunteer is to sit with residents who are nearing death. Occasionally this involves spending time at the nursing home during the night shift. This experience makes me very aware of how noisy a nursing home can be at night.

quotes about nursing homes

Those of you who have been with me for a long time know that I love to read and collect quotes. It seems like many of my readers enjoy quotes, too, because my post about Quotes For Caregivers was shared numerous times.

This month I thought it would be interesting to find quotes about nursing homes to share with you. Sadly, I didn’t find a lot of quotes on this topic and most of them were quite negative.

Interestingly, I did discover a few quotes from famous people that speak of positive and influential experiences with nursing homes during their youth. These are the ones I’m happy to share with you today:
