telephone history activities for nursing home residents

Have you ever heard of Emma M. Nutt? She was the first female telephone operator, and we celebrate her life every year on September 1. That’s the day she started working as a phone operator in Boston, Massachusetts in 1878.

I think this is such a fun day to celebrate with your residents. Telephones have changed tremendously over the decades, and your residents will enjoy sharing lots of fascinating memories about those changes.

nursing home activities for Active Aging Week

Click here for the 2022 update!

There’s an exciting week coming up in September, and I hope every one of you will invite your residents to participate. The event is called Active Aging Week, and this year it’s scheduled for September 23-29. That means you’ll want to start planning your activities right away!

What is the week all about?

Active Aging Week is an annual celebration of the positive aspects of aging. Sponsored by the International Council On Active Aging, this year’s theme is “Inspiring Wellness”.

While we might assume that active aging only involves physical activity, the week focuses on all aspects of positive aging. This includes emotional, spiritual, social, and intellectual wellness.

Are you ready to learn about 5 more fun ways to raise money for smaller projects at your nursing home?

1. Decorate A Bear

Purchase a dozen or so plain teddy bears when you find them on sale. Ask area businesses to decorate them in an elaborate style, then sell the bears at a silent auction.

This makes an excellent stand-alone fundraiser before a holiday such as Christmas or Valentine’s Day. Or you can include the silent auction along with a larger event.

providing musical entertainment at nursing homes

Are you a musician looking for more opportunities to share your talent and love of music with other people? Have you ever considered providing musical entertainment at a nursing home?

Most residents love to hear and see live music. In addition, you’ll add variety and joy to their days.

I want to preface this article by letting you know that I’m not a musician. However, I’ve sat in on many music programs during my time as a nursing home volunteer. So, if you have experience providing musical entertainment at nursing homes, I would love to see you add your suggestions in the comment section.

how to enjoy your work

When I talk with people who work in nursing homes or other long-term care settings, it’s not unusual to hear words of discouragement. While this line of work is incredibly rewarding, there are also times when it drains our souls.

Besides the physical toll it takes on our bodies, this type of work is emotionally demanding. It’s hard to watch the residents we care about as they struggle with pain, loss, confusion, and other enormous challenges.

Then there are the regulations, policies, and funding restrictions that seem to get in the way of providing good care. In addition, we interact with families who seem impossible to please as they struggle with their own hurts.
