nursing home fundraising ideas

Your creativity never ceases to amaze me! Since writing my first two articles about successful fundraisers held in real nursing homes, I’ve become aware of 4 more terrific ideas.

As I describe each event, I’ll include a link to the organization so you can contact them directly for more information. (You’ll find my first two articles here and here.)

how nursing home residents can support hurricane victims

Last year, a friend told me a lovely story about two nursing homes in Worthington, Minnesota. The residents sent encouraging cards and notes to a care facility affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas. You can read the full story in this newspaper article.

I always feel emotional when I read stories about nursing homes affected by hurricanes. You see, back in 2009, we had to evacuate the nursing home where I worked as a nurse.

In our case, it wasn’t a hurricane we feared. It was major flooding from the mighty Red River that runs between North Dakota and Minnesota.

nursing home best practice awardsThe other day I stumbled upon a series of articles about Best Practices awards presented by the Alabama Nursing Home Association. It was fascinating to read about the creative programs nursing homes are developing to enrich the lives of their residents.

I chose a few of my favorite submissions from the past several years to share with you today. I’ll also include links to each nursing home’s website. This will enable you to contact them if you wish to learn more about their innovative programs.

nursing home volunteer experience

Perhaps you forgot to pass along an important message. What if you messed up your schedule and missed an assignment. Maybe you accidentally dropped a possession belonging to a resident and broke it.

Everyone makes mistakes, including volunteers. Fortunately for us, our mistakes usually aren’t a matter of life and death. As volunteers, we probably won’t get fired.

Even so, our mistakes might cause inconvenience, financial loss, or hard feelings. So, what should you do if you make a mistake while volunteering at the nursing home?

nursing home activities for world egg day

Did you enjoy last week’s post about Peanuts Comic Strip Day? Today I’m highlighting another fun and little-known holiday to share with your residents. World Egg Day is celebrated on the second Friday in October, so in 2018 it falls on October 12.

Share egg trivia and jokes

Check out the Chandran’s Poultry website where you’ll find everything you could possibly want to know about eggs. For example, did you know that a mother hen turns her eggs about 50 times a day?

You’ll also want to share these silly egg jokes from the Egg Farmers of Alberta. (How do comedians like their eggs? Funny side up!)
