collecting pop can tabs for charity

One afternoon I walked into the break room of the nursing home where I volunteer, and a new display on a table caught my eye. It included a canister along with a sign. “Donate your pop tabs here”, it said. “One tab provides one minute of chemotherapy for a child.”

Hmm. While this sounds like a wonderful program, I knew it couldn’t possibly be true. We quickly realized that a well-meaning employee had fallen for an urban legend that has gone around for decades.

There are a few different versions of the myth. One says the pop tabs provide free dialysis treatments. Another claims the tabs will be melted down to make a wheelchair for a child in need.

Certified Nursing Assistants who are heroes

Serving as a CNA is a tough job, both physically and mentally. I know because I started working as a nursing assistant when I turned 16 and continued throughout nursing school.

Despite the challenges, I loved my job. And I loved the residents whose stories I’ll carry forever in my heart.

So, it frustrates me greatly when I hear people bashing CNAs and other people who work in nursing homes. Granted, there are a few bad apples in every occupation.

However, in my many years of working in long-term care, I’ve discovered this truth: The vast majority of CNAs are compassionate, dedicated caregivers who truly want what’s best for their residents.

4 Questions To Ask Before You Share Your Music

Several weeks ago I asked my newsletter subscribers for suggestions as to topics they would like to see covered on my blog. One reader requested more information on how to provide meaningful music activities for residents.

Unfortunately, music is not one of my strong points. So I was thrilled when JoAnn Jordan accepted my invitation to write a guest post. JoAnn is a board-certified music therapist. For 15 years she served as an activity director. She then formed Music Sparks, a business that has provided contract music therapy services for over 15 years.

JoAnn encourages others to create their own programs through presentations and a book. You can find her resources and blog posts on the MusicSparks website.

celebrate Mickey Mouse's birthday at the nursing home

This week I’m featuring special activities for you to share with your residents in November. Did you catch Tuesday’s article about America Recycles Day?

Today we’re looking at Mickey Mouse’s birthday. Would you believe Mickey Mouse is turning 90 on November 18? That’s a good reason to celebrate!

Mickey Mouse’s birthday might sound like an activity for children. However, I know many of your residents will also enjoy celebrating Mickey’s special day.

After all, nearly everyone has at least one fond memory of Mickey Mouse. Perhaps it was a trip to Disneyland, a favorite toy, or a cartoon they enjoyed as a child.

Learn a bit of history

Check out this biography website to learn all about the history of Mickey Mouse. For example, did you know that Mickey’s original name was Mortimer Mouse?
