A Mother And Son Journey Through Dementia

January 26, 2019 by Diane Leave a Comment

I was working on a different article for my blog today. Then someone posted this delightful video on LinkedIn, and I knew I had to share it with my readers.

Through words and photographs, Tony Luciani tells how he and his mamma maintain their relationship during her dementia journey. I hope you’ll take just 14 minutes out of your day to watch this lovely story.

One more note:  On January 30th, 2019, Tony’s mamma will celebrate her 96th birthday! She’ll be thrilled if you send her a card:

Did you have an opportunity to try a couple of the acts of kindness for January? I would love to see you post your experiences in the comment section!

When your residents do acts of kindness in February, they’ll join people from around the world in touching the lives of other people. That’s because International Random Acts of Kindness Week falls on February 10-16 this year.

Check out these fun acts of kindness your residents are sure to enjoy:

1. Color pictures for Color A Smile. Pictures will be distributed to nursing homes as well as to military personnel. You can also request pictures to be sent to residents at your nursing home who could use a smile.

S&S Worldwide is one of the most popular places to order supplies for nursing home activities. Recently, I was surprised to discover that you can often buy their products at lower prices by going through Amazon.

So, if you’re shopping for activity supplies, I encourage you to check out both sites so you get the best price. These are a few examples of products I found at lower prices through Amazon. (Prices subject to change.)

How Libraries Enrich The Lives Of Nursing Home Residents

How libraries help nursing home residents

What do you think of when I mention library services at a nursing home? You probably picture someone going up and down the halls with a cartload of books that residents can check out. While this is a tremendous service, it’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to library resources that benefit our residents.

Book Delivery

Of course, the most popular library service involves residents requesting specific books and having them delivered right to their rooms. Residents can also check out books and magazines online for use with e-readers.

In addition, you can let the library know about the interests of individual residents. The librarians will then make book recommendations for each person.

nursing home MDS

People in healthcare love to talk in abbreviations. NPO, HOB, ADL, SOB (No, I didn’t just use a naughty word!), PRN, STAT. If listeners don’t know what these abbreviations mean, it can cause a lot of confusion.

One abbreviation you frequently hear in nursing homes is MDS. That’s because the MDS plays a considerable role in what goes on during a resident’s stay. Today I’ll attempt to explain what the MDS is all about.

What is an MDS?

The Minimum Data Set is part of a federally required clinical assessment for all residents of Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing homes in the United States.  It’s completed for all residents of these facilities, regardless of how they pay for their care.
