This annual event at The Wesley Community in Saratoga Springs, New York, provides tons of fun for all generations. the Eden Alternative

When I was a young girl, my grandpa spent some time in a local nursing home. Back then, nursing homes were a lot like hospitals.

As I try to picture the nursing home in my mind, I can see white walls and lots of gray metal fixtures. I also recall the subtle scent of Pine-Sol disinfectant.

There seemed to be nothing interesting to do when we visited Grandpa at the nursing home. Sadly, I quickly became bored and wanted to go home.

Fast forward to the Eden Alternative

Many years later, I worked as a nurse at a nursing home that embraces the Eden Alternative philosophy. This place was alive with the energy that comes from dogs, cats, fish, rabbits, as well as kids from the childcare center.

Nursing Homes In The Good Old Days

Nursing homes often receive criticism in the media. Unfortunately, sometimes, this is well deserved.

We need to address these issues and make positive changes. However, I think it’s also essential to look at how far nursing homes have come over the past few decades.

I started as a candy striper (teen volunteers who wore red and white striped pinafores) in a nursing home when I was 14 years old. Later, I worked as a nursing assistant during the late 1970s and early 1980s as part of my journey to becoming an RN. Today, I want to share some of my memories from those good old days.

nursing home stories

Do you know what I believe is the best way to enhance the quality of life for our nursing home residents? I think it happens when we’re willing to share our creativity and innovation with other facilities, rather than keeping it to ourselves.

That’s why I’m inviting you to let me know about the positive things that are going on at your facility—whether it’s a nursing home, assisted living facility, CCRC, or another organization that serves our elders.

Now here’s the fun part. My blog readers live in many different countries. This means that when you share your ideas and your stories on this blog, you can enrich the lives of residents living here and also on the other side of the world. How cool is that!

nursing home helps others through Kiva

Each month, I like to introduce my readers to an opportunity that allows you and your residents to reach out and make a positive difference in the lives of other people. Today I’m sharing a program that I heard about through a local assisted living facility. It’s called Kiva, and I’ll highlight several commonly asked questions.

What is Kiva?

Kiva is a nonprofit organization with a mission of helping put an end to poverty. They do this by providing loans to individuals around the world to help them become self-sufficient.
