Halloween activities for nursing home residents

Over the past several days, I’ve had lots of people searching on my blog for Halloween activities. For some of you, this year will be back to business as usual, and you can resume your pre-pandemic traditions.

After being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer last year, I promised to share what I learn along the way. (You can find my story in the cancer journey tab on the sidebar.) Today I have two more lessons I believe you’ll find helpful.

1. Be careful what you suggest

Over the past several months, a few people have shared advice on how they believe I should manage my cancer treatment side effects. I know they mean well. They see me hurting, and they want to make things better.

Over the past several months, I’ve been sharing my at-home volunteer projects with my readers. These projects have been such a blessing to me since I’m not able to get out of the house a lot during my cancer treatments.

I love to share my projects with you because I know they will be of interest to many of the residents in your senior living communities. And, you might also enjoy doing them as an individual or a family.

Most of this month’s activities involve creating greeting cards. Consider scheduling one or more of these projects for World Card Making Day. It’s coming up on the first Saturday in October, which falls on October 1 in 2022.

I’m super excited about a week coming up in early October. It’s called Active Aging Week, and I know it will provide a much-needed boost for your residents and staff as we come out of the COVID pandemic.

Active Aging Week is an annual celebration of the positive aspects of aging. It encourages people over the age of 50 to experience wellness in all aspects of life: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, vocational, environmental, and intellectual.

Developed in 2003 by the International Council On Active Aging, several countries now celebrate this important week. These include Australia, India, Ireland, the U.S.A., and Canada.
