Yesterday, I was scouring the web looking for topic ideas for future blog posts. Soon, I came upon a fascinating thread of articles about a program at Life Care Centers of America. They call it “Whatever It Takes And Then Some.”

The program rewards employees who go above and beyond their job description in caring for residents, family members, and each other. Monthly and yearly winners receive a cash award besides being honored by management and co-workers.

As I read through the stories of the winners, it touched my heart to see the love and caring demonstrated by these employees. Today I want to share several of my favorites.

This month, I’m completing my 5-part series on how our senses change as we age. Today we’ll look at our sense of sight. (No pun intended!) We’ll also consider how we can support our residents who experience declining vision.

While some people avoid significant changes in their other four senses, we all can pretty much guarantee that our vision will decline to some degree as we age. Many of the changes are a natural part of growing older. Others result from diseases that become more common with aging.

How to prevent the flu

I’m not trying to insult anyone’s intelligence here. I realize that everybody knows how to wash their hands. But here’s my concern. The CDC recently announced that more than 900 people in the U.S. have died from influenza-related illnesses over the past two months.

Imagine if a previously unknown illness suddenly killed 900 people in our country. Wouldn’t we panic? And wouldn’t we do everything possible to avoid catching and spreading the illness?

Unfortunately, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the flu going around every year that we’ve become complacent. The statistics don’t scare us anymore. That is until one of those people that dies from influenza is your mother, brother, or child.
