My daughter knows I’ve been looking for projects to do while I’m at home recovering from the effects of cancer and its treatment side effects. So, this weekend she surprised me with two paint-by-number kits.

When I was a child, my sister and I loved to do paint-by-number. These days, the art has expanded to include a wide variety of kits for people of all ages. Paint-by-number is perfect for people like me who wish to create something beautiful but lack artistic talent.

This topic wasn’t on my original list of articles to write in February. But then a few of you asked for activity ideas for 2-22-22, and I’m glad you did. I’ve had great fun researching this unique date and coming up with activities that I know your residents and staff will enjoy.

First, a bit of background…

We call 2-22-22 a palindrome date because it reads the same both forward and backward. Palindrome dates aren’t all that uncommon. However, what makes 2-22-22 unique is that it also falls on a Tuesday. (Or should we call it Twosday?)

It’s also unusual because all the numbers are the same. The next similar date (3-3-33) won’t arrive for another eleven years. However, it still won’t be as unique because there’s no weekday called Threesday!

If you read the recent post about my New Year’s resolutions for 2022, you learned how much I dislike winter. So, one of my goals for this year is to come up with several fun activities to make winter more tolerable.

My first project was to create a bird feeder to hang on my deck. I anticipated it bringing hours of entertainment for me and for my cat, Ollie.

To make the bird feeder, I began by saving empty toilet paper rolls. I painted the rolls with peanut butter and rolled them in colorful birdseed. After stringing the rolls together, I hung my new bird feeder on the railing of my deck.

Who Is The Nursing Home Administrator?

As you volunteer or work in the nursing home, I believe it’s helpful to understand the roles and backgrounds of other people who serve your residents. Perhaps this knowledge will even prompt you to expand your education and take on a new career.

In the past, we’ve looked at the roles of the nursing team, rehab team, social worker, dietician, and pharmacist. Today, we’ll focus on the nursing home administrator.

Our aging population will cause a significant demand for nursing home administrators in the future. The U.S. Bureau of Statistics expects growth in this field to be much greater than average over the next several years.

When I asked my readers for topics they would like to see addressed on my blog, a couple of you asked if I could share more personal stories about my day-to-day experiences as a nursing home volunteer. I love that suggestion!

Unfortunately, my impaired immune system due to cancer treatment, combined with the COVID pandemic, makes it unsafe for me to volunteer anywhere right now. That’s why I’m looking for volunteer activities to do at home.

If you read the post about my New Year’s resolutions for 2022, you know that one of my goals is to reach out to other people with acts of kindness throughout the year. During the month of January, I resolved to do a different at-home volunteer project each week. Today I’ll share what I came up with. Note that you can do any of these projects with the residents in your senior living community, too!
