If you’ve been with my blog for a while, you know that I’ve been doing a variety of at-home volunteer projects while undergoing cancer treatment. I’m sharing these projects because they’re also perfect to do with the residents of your senior care communities. Or you can do them as an individual or with your family. (For my newer readers, you can still catch up on my January, March, and May projects.)
This month, I’ve been working on what has become my two favorite at-home volunteer projects. The first is decorating lunch bags for Meals On Wheels. (You can read about my personal experience as a recipient of meals in this post from last year.)
My second project is making cards for Letters Against Isolation. I hope you’ll check out their website. Not only can you sign up as a volunteer, but you can also request letters for residents in your senior living community.
And my new volunteer project for this month is writing thank-you notes for people taking part in Honor Flight. This wonderful program pays tribute to veterans by providing all-expense paid trips to visit the memorials in Washington, D.C.
Honor Flight serves veterans from World War II through the Vietnam War. They also prioritize vets with terminal illnesses or serious injuries regardless of the time of service. The program has honored over 245,000 veterans since its inception in 2005.
Please contact your regional Honor Flight hub if you’re interested in writing thank-you notes to veterans. I hope you’ll also think about any vets in your senior living community who would benefit from taking part in the program.
