Is excitement building in your community as you prepare for this year’s Active Aging Week? I hope you’re planning lots of activities to help your residents join this worldwide celebration of positive aging.
If this event is new to you, don’t worry! The activities begin on September 23, so there’s still plenty of time to participate.
Today, I would like to highlight what I believe is one of the best opportunities available during Active Aging Week.
WALK!
Originally developed by Aegis Therapy for use at their facilities, WALK! is now open to anyone—even individuals who wish to take part at home. Since the program is in its 10th year, they’ve come up with a vast trove of excellent ideas to promote physical activity.
Simply go to their website and register to participate. There’s no cost to you unless you wish to order promotional items through their site (giveaway items, music CDs, T-shirts, etc). Otherwise, you can access a variety of online materials for free.
The WALK! website offers suggestions for daily activities if you wish to take part throughout the entire Active Aging Week. Or, if you prefer, you can make it a single-day event.
One thing I appreciate most about WALK! is the fact that they offer physical activities for people with all levels of mobility. These are just a few examples of events that facilities have hosted in the past:
- Indoor and outdoor walks
- Visits from local sports figures (team mascots, cheerleaders, college athletes, etc.)
- Musical activities that involve clapping or toe-tapping
- Wii bowling tournaments
- Drumming circles
- Traditional and seated yoga
- Dance lessons
- Balance exercises
- Scavenger hunts
I would love to hear about the activities you’re planning for Active Aging Week. Please share in the comment section!
