Today I’m introducing another excellent national holiday to celebrate with your residents. World Water Day was initiated in 1993 to promote awareness of the importance of water and the need for conservation.
Check out these fun activities to celebrate the day. Please feel free to add your suggestions in the comment section.
Strike Up A Conversation
- Reminisce about water-related weather events your residents remember such as floods, hurricanes, or droughts.
- Ask residents to brainstorm ways to conserve water. (Turn off the water while brushing teeth, etc.)
- Play a trivia game with these fun water facts.
- Solve a word scramble with words related to water.
Sing Songs About Water
An amazing number of songs have been written about water. Host a sing-a-long or invite a musician to entertain your residents with water-themed songs. These are a few favorites. Your residents will also enjoy reminiscing about the musicians who made the songs famous. Have any of them seen these stars in person?
- Singing In The Rain (Gene Kelly)
- Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel)
- Beyond The Sea (Bobby Darin)
- Black Water (The Doobie Brothers)
- The River (Garth Brooks)
- Candle On The Water (Helen Reddy)
- Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head (BJ Thomas)
- Old Man River (Count Basie)
- Yellow Submarine (The Beatles)
- Moon River (Andy Williams)
- River of Love (George Strait)
Host A Guest Speaker
- Invite someone from a water treatment plant to come in and talk with your residents. The process involved in producing clean, drinkable water is fascinating!
- Ask an environmentalist to talk about the importance of water conservation.
- Invite a scientist to discuss the process of producing hydroelectric power.
- Ask a farmer to talk about water conversation in agriculture.
Invite Children To Join Residents For Science Experiments
- Try one of these 5 water experiments.
- Check out even more fun water activities found in the Explore Water book.
Sample Different Types Of Water
- Share information about different types of water, then sample a few. This could include tap, spring, mineral, purified, sparkling, and distilled water. Ask residents to vote on which type they like best.
Read A Book
Invite children to join your residents, then read a book about water. These are a few favorites:
- A Cool Drink of Water
- At The Waterworks (A Magic School Bus book)
- Down Comes The Rain
- A Drop Around The World
Donate To A Charity
- Host a fundraiser and donate to a charity that digs wells for people who don’t have clean water to drink. I personally support Wellspring, but there are many other wonderful organizations out there, too. You’ll find tons of easy fundraising ideas at Fundraiser Insight.
