Make A Difference Day ideas

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us feel a desire to reach out and make a positive difference in other people’s lives. Many of our residents feel this way, too.

That’s why I hope you’ll take part in Make A Difference Day on October 24. You and your residents will join volunteers around the world in doing acts of kindness for other people.

It’s more challenging to find meaningful activities this year because of social distancing. But don’t let that stop you!

Check out this list of 10 ideas to get started. (You may need to make adjustments to comply with your area’s pandemic protocols.)

1.  Call your local animal shelter and find out how your residents can help. Perhaps they can bake dog treats or crochet cat toys.

2.  Color pictures for Color A Smile. Your masterpieces will brighten the day for troops serving overseas and senior citizens.

3.  As a group, write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper expressing gratitude for the staff at your senior living community.

4.  Paint kindness rocks, then spread your creations around your community to brighten someone’s day.

5.  Invite residents to write notes of appreciation on an enormous banner, then hang it in the employee break room.

6.  Contact your local homeless shelter and ask how you can help. Options might include making no-sew fleece blankets, scarves, or hats.

7.  Create thank-you cards for people who support your senior living community by providing services. You might include the mail carrier, trash collector, and van driver.

8. Encourage/assist residents to call old friends or family members they haven’t spoken to in a while. A surprise phone call will brighten someone’s day.

9.  Host a fundraiser and donate the money to a local charity selected by your residents. You’ll find lots of ideas in my fundraising archives.

10.  Recruit residents to read stories virtually to children at a nearby daycare center.
