Does National Toast Day sound like a boring holiday to celebrate? Think again! Today I’ll share lots of fun activities your residents will surely enjoy.
Toast Day originated in the UK in 2014, and the event quickly spread to other countries. Today we celebrate it every year on the last Thursday of February.
How to celebrate National Toast Day
Begin the day by serving toast for breakfast. My favorite is French toast. Did you know that this delicious dish didn’t originate in France? Your residents will enjoy learning the history of French toast with this article from The Kitchen Project.
You can also serve traditional toast for breakfast. Not just any old toast, but something special. First, begin by offering a variety of interesting breads. (My favorite for toasting is English muffin bread.)
Next, ask your residents what they like to eat on their toast. Check out these toast topping ideas from around the world. You can also offer a variety of simple toppings:
- cinnamon and sugar
- avocados
- honey
- jam or jelly
- fried egg
- cream cheese
- peanut butter & bananas
- marmalade
- bacon
- cheese
- Nutella
Later, get your residents together to learn more about toast. For example, you can share the history of toast or these fun toast facts.
If you want to get even more creative, introduce your residents to toast art. (Did you even know there was such a thing?) Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Your residents will get a chuckle out of these art masterpieces recreated on toast. Perhaps they’ll even want to make their own!
- Provide supplies so your residents can make painted toast.
- Pick up a novelty toaster and you can choose from lots of fun designs to print on your toast.
If afternoon works better for your activity, consider offering a toast tasting. Provide a variety of toasted breads and creative toppings, then ask residents to vote for their favorites.
