Are you looking for fun summer activities for the residents in your senior living community? Then you’ll want to add National Go Fishing Day to your activity calendar for June 18.
I know your residents will enjoy these options:
Plan a fishing trip
Did you know there are organizations that can help you bring a group of residents on a fishing trip? The one I’m familiar with is called Let’s Go Fishing.
I know there are other organizations specifically geared toward hosting fishing trips for veterans. If you have experience with any of these groups, please share in the comments.
If you can’t bring your residents to the lake, you can always bring the lake to your residents. Here’s a great fishing story from a nursing home in Kentucky.
Have a good laugh
Laughter is the best medicine, so be sure to share these funny fishing jokes with your residents. (Why are fish so well educated? They swim in schools!)
Get creative
There are so many fun crafts you can do with your residents on Go Fishing Day. Start by checking out these 55 beach craft ideas.
Spark a conversation
Get a little group of residents together and talk about their fishing experiences. These questions will get you started:
- Do you remember the first time you ever went fishing?
- What’s the best fish to eat? How do you cook it?
- Where is the best place to go fishing?
- Tell us about the biggest fish you ever caught. What did you do with it?
- Have you ever caught something that wasn’t a fish?
- What’s the best bait to use?
You can also share these 63 fish facts. For example, did you know that many brands of lipstick contain an ingredient that comes from fish scales?
Enjoy fish food
At some point during the day, you’ll want to treat your residents to fish-related food. It could be something as simple as a snack of goldfish crackers.
Or, you can cook up an entire fish dinner. A favorite of our residents is an outdoor fish fry.
Play a game
Have you ever played the game Go Fish? I know some of your residents remember the game from their childhood.
You can purchase special Go Fish cards, or you can play with a regular deck of cards. Here’s a refresher on how to play the game.
