I’m guessing most of you are busy planning lots of fun Valentine’s Day-themed activities for next month. But what about the residents who, for one reason or another, don’t look forward to red hearts and love songs?
There’s another holiday we can celebrate on February 14 that these residents are sure to enjoy. It’s National Ferris Wheel Day! After all, who hasn’t ridden on a Ferris wheel at some time in their life?
Ferris Wheel Day honors George Ferris, who built the first Ferris wheel for the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893. He was born on February 14, 1859.
Check out these activities you can offer in addition to your Valentine’s Day celebration:
Plan an outing
If you’re lucky enough to have a Ferris wheel nearby, this is the perfect day to take a group of residents out for a ride. We usually think of a Ferris wheel as something you find in an amusement park, but nowadays, many Ferris wheels are found indoors. For example, in my community, there’s a wonderful Ferris wheel inside the Scheels sporting goods store. (You may wish to call ahead and find out the least busy times.)
Share a history lesson
The history of the development of the Ferris wheel is quite fascinating. Here you can find a summary from Smithsonian Magazine. If your residents would like to learn more, there’s an excellent book called Mr. Ferris and His Wheel available on Amazon or in some public libraries. (The book was written for kids, but adults enjoy it just as much.)
Enjoy a snack
Since Ferris wheels usually exist in amusement parks, this is a perfect day to enjoy carnival foods. Ask your residents to tell you their favorites. Perhaps they’ll mention corn dogs, funnel cakes, cotton candy, or buttered popcorn. (I know. None of these foods are healthy. But it’s okay to splurge once in a while!)
Reminisce
While you’re enjoying your snack, invite your residents to share stories about their experiences with Ferris wheels. For example:
- Tell me about your first ride on a Ferris wheel.
- Did you ever ride on a famous Ferris wheel? (London Eye, High Roller in Las Vegas, Niagara SkyWheel at Niagara Falls, Navy Pier Wheel in Chicago, etc.)
- Do you remember how much it cost for your first Ferris wheel ride?
- Did you ever see someone get sick on a Ferris wheel? (It happens!)
- Did you ever have a scary experience on a Ferris wheel?
Play some games
You’ll also want to include a variety of carnival games in your Ferris Wheel Day celebration. Ask your residents for suggestions, then create your own. These might consist of ring toss, balloon pop, basketball shoot, pick a duck, or the bottle stand.
Offer small prizes at each game. (Donated, of course.) Just be sure nobody rigs the games as they might do at the carnival!
Be creative
If you search online, you can find many instructions for making your own mini Ferris wheel. Here’s one made from popsicle sticks. Or check out this one made from a cake mix and rice cereal.
Have you ever celebrated National Ferris Wheel Day at your senior living community? I would love to see you add your suggestions in the comment section!
