Do you think September is one of the toughest months to come up with fun activities at your nursing home? I’m asking because I recently received questions from three of my readers who are struggling to fill their September calendars.
In response, I directed them to my “little-known holiday” post where you can find four enjoyable activities for September. Today I’m adding one more: National Coffee Day on September 29.
Even if you’ve finished your calendar for next month, I know you can sneak in a few of these activities involving coffee:
Taste different types of coffee
Provide a variety of coffees for your residents to sample. If you want to get fancy, you can also introduce your residents to the art of coffee cupping.
For even more fun, invite a barista from a local coffee shop to talk about various types of coffee. Perhaps they’ll also demonstrate how to do milk foam art.
Enjoy coffee & a snack
For an afternoon snack, serve foods that pair up well with a hot cup of coffee. Our favorites include pie, donuts, and coffee cake. Or you could serve a snack made with coffee as an ingredient.
Learn something new
While your residents enjoy their snack, entertain them with these fun posts:
21 Coffee Facts (Did you know that coffee comes from berry seeds, not beans?)
40 Coffee Jokes & Puns (Why did the coffee shop close for the day? Because a storm was brewing.)
21 Unusual Uses For Coffee (Find out if your residents have tried any of these tips!)
Get Creative
Introduce your residents to coffee-themed craft projects. (You can find a lot more great ideas on Pinterest.)
Include the staff
Many coffee shops offer free coffee on National coffee day. Find out what’s going on in your community and let your staff know. They can pick up a cup of coffee on their way to or from work.
You could also bring a Keurig machine to work and treat the staff to a fun variety of flavored coffees. Amazon offers great deals when you buy the pods in bulk.
I hope this post helped you fill your activity calendars for September. Now, as you look ahead to October, be sure to check out these previous posts. The first one offers lots of tips for opening your nursing home to trick-or-treaters. However, if COVID prevents you from inviting kids into your nursing home, you can still find lots of other creative activities for Halloween.
