Do you ever feel helpless when you see all the unsettling things going on in our world today? I know I do. I feel like I want to make things better, but I don’t know where to begin. Perhaps some of your residents feel that way, too, when they watch the daily news.
That’s why I’m excited about a special day coming up on April 28. I hope you and your residents will get excited, too!
It’s called the Do One Give Challenge, and it’s sponsored by an organization called 365Give. Perhaps you remember me mentioning this organization in the past. That’s because it was an inspiration for my New Year’s resolution to do more acts of kindness in 2022.
Why should we take part?
The goal of the Do One Give Challenge is for people around the world to complete and share over 50,000 acts of giving on April 28. Can you imagine what a difference this could make in our world?
Of course, the hope is that this day will inspire everyone to continue to do kind acts for others long after April 28. In part, that’s because when we do something nice for someone else, we experience what’s called a “Helper’s High”. Basically, this involves the release of feel-good hormones in our bodies when we give to others. (You can read more about the scientific research behind a Helper’s High on the 365Give website.)
Also, when we are the recipient of a kind act, it often prompts us to want to pay it forward. This means one small act can multiply into a chain of kindness that extends to lots of other people. Our world could certainly use that right now!
How do we get started?
You’ll need to register to gain full access to the 365Give website. It’s free and there are no strings attached. Next, you’ll want to check out all their resources to help you take part in this year’s Do One Give Challenge on April 28.
I hope you’ll get your residents together and brainstorm ideas for giving to others. Residents can choose to do individual projects, or you can do one bigger project as a group.
If you need suggestions, you’ll find thousands of them on the 365Give website. The website authors list lots of possibilities, and you’ll also find a page where people around the world post their acts of giving.
Update: For my Do One Give Day project, I decorated 100 lunch bags for the Meals on Wheels program in Breckenridge, Minnesota.
What gives have you done this month? I would love to see you share them in the comment section!
