The end is in sight! Within the next several months, the pandemic will finally end. Senior living communities will once again open their doors, and our residents can enjoy more normal activities.
With this in mind, I’ve been searching for creative off-campus activities we can offer our residents. So I was excited to stumble upon several articles that shared ideas for elders to serve as volunteer “secret shoppers”. Their purpose is to check out local businesses to assure they are elder-friendly.
The secret shoppers visit a variety of businesses. This might include retail stores, restaurants, and service providers such as health clubs.
The shoppers evaluate a wide variety of issues. For example, does the business provide:
- easy-to-read signage
- adequate lighting
- low noise levels
- helpful, accessible employees
- easy-to-read text (on clothing tags, menus, etc.)
- clear aisles
- adequate public seating
- ample parking
Some communities around the country go so far as to offer certification programs for businesses that pass the secret shopper evaluations. The business may receive a window decal showing their elder-friendly status, and they can also be listed in a local business directory for seniors. For one example of a certification program, you can check out the NY Connects website.
Even if you don’t wish to take part in a formal certification program, I know your residents will enjoy the fun of serving as secret shoppers. Afterward, their experiences will make for a fascinating group discussion. You’ll also want to contact the businesses to compliment them on the positive features your residents observed and let them know about any areas for improvement.
What innovative programs do the residents enjoy at your senior living community? Let me know, and I’ll feature them in a future article!
