I hope you’ve been taking positive steps to Rekindle Joy In Your Work over the past month. We all go through phases when the enjoyment we once felt for our job begins to dwindle. That’s why it’s so important to take action now before we dive into full-fledged burnout.
Today I’m sharing four more ways to take charge of rekindling the joy in your work. As I said in the previous article, everyone’s situation is different. So, please choose the suggestions that are most meaningful to you. And be sure to check back at the end of next month when I’ll share even more ideas!
Address Problems At Work In A Positive Manner
- When something is bothering you, address it right away using the correct chain of command. You’ll help prevent a minor issue from turning into a huge problem.
- Stay away from people who dwell on unproductive gossip and complaining. This merely drags everyone down and doesn’t solve the problem.
- Choose a minor problem you see at work and brainstorm ways to make positive changes. Then take action! Success with a minor issue will give you the confidence to tackle bigger problems.
- If there is bullying going on at your workplace, it needs to stop. The Healthy Workforce Institute offers excellent advice on how to put an end to bullying.
Maintain Positive Relationships At Work
- Give sincere compliments to your coworkers. How often do we think something positive about someone but we don’t say it out loud. Your genuine (and appropriate) compliment might make someone’s day!
- Make a point of smiling and saying “Hi” to everyone you encounter at work, addressing people by name if possible. A friendly attitude is contagious.
- Help someone else whenever you have the opportunity. It’s even more fun if you surprise a co-worker with an anonymous act of kindness.
- Be a support person for new employees. Think back to how it felt when you were the new kid on the block.
- Find ways to celebrate special events at work. Whether a co-worker passed an important exam, ran a 5k, or reached their 10th wedding anniversary, make a big deal out of it.
End Your Day On A Positive Note
- Whenever possible, unplug during the last hour of your day. Turn off the TV, phone, and computer. Instead, enjoy quality time with your family, read an uplifting book, spend time in prayer or devotions, or listen to relaxing music. Do whatever helps you to relax and unwind for a good night’s sleep.
- Think back over your day and focus on positive interactions you had with your residents. Jot down a few notes about how a resident’s day was made better because you were there.
- Set a couple of goals for the next day, or write a brief to-do list. This helps you feel better prepared for work when you wake up in the morning.
- Keep a gratitude journal by your bed and jot down something you’re thankful for each night.
Work On Yourself
- Take classes to improve your skills at work. Besides traditional workshops, there are lots of free online resources such as MOOCs or Khan Academy.
- Look for opportunities for advancement or taking on a new role at work. Sometimes all we need are a change of pace and new challenges.
- Volunteer to serve on a team or committee at work. Seeing that you were a part of positive changes at your facility just might provide the boost you need.
- Take good care of yourself so you’re able to function at your peak level. This means making healthy eating, exercise, and adequate sleep a priority.
