Thank you to all of my readers for your patience, as I’ve taken the past few weeks off to adjust to my new chemotherapy routine. During my time of rest and recovery, I enjoyed watching a few episodes of Today on NBC.
You probably know that, in collaboration with Smucker’s, the show recognizes people turning 100 years or older. They also honor couples celebrating 75 or more years together. (If you’re unfamiliar with the program, you can check out this YouTube video for an example.)
After watching an episode, I became curious as to the history behind this unique series. So, I did some research, and I’m sharing what I learned because I know it will interest your residents. Maybe you can even help someone get featured on the show!
The Smucker’s story
Way back in the 1890s, Jerome Smucker started a business selling apple cider and apple butter. He sold his products door to door from a horse-drawn wagon.
Later, Smucker opened a fruit processing plant, and Smucker’s preserves were born. Today, the company boasts an enormous line of products including coffee, consumer foods, and pet foods.
The TV collaboration
In 1983, famed NBC meteorologist Willard Scott began announcing the birthdays of centenarians on TV. This led to the collaboration with Smucker’s and the well-known faces on jelly jars. After Scott’s retirement, meteorologist Al Roker carried on the tradition which continues today.
How to nominate someone
Do you know a person soon to be 100 years or older? Or a couple that has been together for at least 75 years? For consideration, simply fill out the nomination form on the Today website. You’ll also need to include a clear photo.
Please note that you always need permission from the person you nominate. It can’t be a surprise! Also, since NBC receives far more requests than they can accommodate, nominating someone isn’t a guarantee they’ll appear on the show.
Has the Today show ever featured any of your residents on a jelly jar? I would love to see their story in the comment section!
