The other day, I was watching an interview with a renowned children’s educator. (I apologize for not jotting down his name.) The interviewer asked how parents and other caregivers can best support a child’s education. His answer?
- Read books to children.
- Provide books for children to read.
This made me think of a terrific way your residents can also help promote a child’s education. It’s called Feeding Reading, and it’s co-sponsored by Kellogg’s and Penguin Random House.
I hope you’ll share the details of the program with your volunteers, staff, and families. They can earn one free book for each participating Kellogg’s product they purchase, up to a maximum of ten free books.
I’ve taken part in the program for at least three years, and it’s super easy to request books. You simply take a picture of your receipt containing a qualifying product, then go to FeedingReading.com to register and select your books.
Do you have a daycare center in your senior living community? Then you can ask people to request they ship the books directly to the daycare. (Your child care director may wish to make a list of preferred books from the extensive Feeding Reading catalog.)
Otherwise, people can have the books sent to their homes, and they can drop them off at your nursing home. I can think of several ways to use the books:
- Make them available for residents to read to grandchildren during video visits.
- Offer them as prizes if you provide a Bingo store for your residents.
- Set up a little library so children can read books when they visit.
- Include them as options if you provide a place for residents to shop for gifts before the holidays.
As you make people aware of the program, be sure to communicate three important dates:
- You must purchase eligible products between 5/23/22 and 9/30/22.
- Submit receipt within 30 days of purchase and by 10/30/22.
- Redeem books by 11/15/22.
What other ways can you think of to use the free books? Please share in the comment section!
