activities for International Day for Older Persons

As you plan your activities for October, I hope you include International Day for Older Persons on October 1. Established by the United Nations in 1990, the day honors the contributions older people make to society.

Check out these activities for your residents and staff to enjoy as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of this special day.

Media attention

I know you have residents with fascinating stories that people would enjoy hearing. Contact your local media and invite them to interview one or more residents about their accomplishments.

Wall of fame

Create a display of resident photos along with interesting facts about their lives. Even if visitors aren’t allowed in your nursing home yet, staff can enjoy the display and learn more about their residents.

Fun facts

Share stories with your residents about older adults who have accomplished amazing feats. You’ll find examples in these articles:

Journaling

Encourage residents to write about their accomplishments and how they’ve made a positive difference during their lives. This is a great project for students or volunteers. They can help residents record their stories in person or through virtual visits.

Letter writing

Invite students from a local school to write letters to your residents. Then help your residents respond with letters of their own. Encourage them to include stories about their lives and accomplishments. You’ll help the students develop a better understanding and respect for their elders.

Longevity secrets

Living to the age of 100 is an accomplishment all by itself. I know your residents will enjoy hearing these secrets for a long life from centenarians around the country. If you have residents over the age of 100, be sure to learn their secrets, too!
