How Nursing Home Residents Can Encourage Others

In this day of smartphones and social media, old-fashioned letter writing seems like a lost art. Nonetheless, I’ll bet many of your residents would enjoy the opportunity to send words of encouragement to people through letters and cards.

Today I’m introducing you to two organizations that welcome participation from nursing homes and other care facilities.

Soldier’s Angels

This nonprofit organization supports military families, deployed service members, and veterans. These are just a few of the many services they provide:

  • Care packages for deployed soldiers
  • Visits to hospitalized vets
  • Adaptive technology for injured vets (ex: voice-controlled laptops)
  • Box lunches and hygiene kits for homeless vets

Your residents can get involved in Soldier’s Angels by joining the Letter Writing Team and writing encouraging letters to deployed service members around the world. The minimum commitment is 3 months, and they can send as many letters as they wish.

You can also request that Soldier’s Angels send a card to a vet who lives at your facility. This could be for a special occasion like a birthday, or simply to say thank you for their service. Go through this link to fill out the request form.

Cards For Hospitalized Kids

The motto of this organization is, “Doctors provide medicine and we provide hope, joy, and magic”. They fulfill this goal by sending homemade greeting cards to hospitalized children in all 50 states.

If your residents choose to take part, they can send cards written in either English or Spanish. More details are available on their website. The resident only signs their first name on the card, and they exchange no personal information, so you need not worry about privacy concerns.

The organization also encourages groups to host a one-time card making party. You provide the supplies, then invite residents, staff, family members, and volunteers to share their creativity.
