This topic wasn’t on my original list of articles to write in February. But then a few of you asked for activity ideas for 2-22-22, and I’m glad you did. I’ve had great fun researching this unique date and coming up with activities that I know your residents and staff will enjoy.
First, a bit of background…
We call 2-22-22 a palindrome date because it reads the same both forward and backward. Palindrome dates aren’t all that uncommon. However, what makes 2-22-22 unique is that it also falls on a Tuesday. (Or should we call it Twosday?)
It’s also unusual because all the numbers are the same. The next similar date (3-3-33) won’t arrive for another eleven years. However, it still won’t be as unique because there’s no weekday called Threesday!
With that out of the way, let’s look at fun activities for 2-22-22:
Dress up
1. Encourage staff to pair up with a resident and dress as twins for the day.
2. Invite residents and staff to wear two of something:
- Neckties
- Hair bows
- Mismatched socks
- Hats
- Watches
3. Everyone can wear a tutu! You’ll find easy patterns to make your own on YouTube.
4. Would you like to provide a little thank-you prize for everyone who takes part? Consider going to the grocery store and picking up snacks that come in two-packs, such as cookies, granola bars, or candy.
Enjoy a snack
Serve a snack containing foods commonly served in pairs. Even better, serve the snack at exactly 2:22 pm!
- Cheese and crackers
- Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
- Apple pie and ice cream
- Donuts and coffee
- Hot cocoa and marshmallows
- Milk and cookies
Learn something new
1. Did you know that the words two, to, and too are homophones? These are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. Challenge your residents to come up with more homophones. Possibilities include:
- eight/ate
- flower/flour
- right/write
- knot/not
- sell/cell
2. Talk about how life has changed in the past 100 years by comparing 1922 and 2022. For example, did you know that the average life expectancy in 1922 was only 54 years? You can find lots of other interesting facts in this article by History.com.
Be artistic
Draw a big “2” on pieces of paper using a black marker. Invite residents to make the number into something else by using colored pencils or colored markers. You’ll trigger creativity and probably get a few laughs, too.
Play a game
1. Play Finish the Phrase (a favorite game among our memory care residents) using only sentences containing the word “two”.
- Two can play at that…..game.
- There are two sides to every…..story.
- It takes two to…..tango.
- Two heads are better than…..one.
- They are two of a…..kind.
- Two wrongs don’t make a…..right.
- It’s the lesser of two…..evils.
- They’re like two peas in a…..pod.
- Take two aspirins and call me in the…..morning.
- The dancer has two left…..feet.
- I took one step forward and two steps…..back.
- He put two and two…..together
- We rode on a bicycle built for…..two.
- Two’s company but three’s a…..crowd.
2. Challenge residents to come up with the longest list of things that come in twos. Examples might be ears, chopsticks, skiis, windshield wipers, and dice.
3. You can also come up with a list of famous pairs of people:
- Bonnie & Clyde
- Adam & Eve
- Lewis & Clark
- Mickey Mouse & Minnie Mouse (Ok, they’re not people but they still count!)
- Batman & Robin
Sing a song
Did you know that lots of songs have the number 2 in their title? These are a few you can share with your residents:
- “Two Hound Dogs” Bill Haley & His Comets (1955)
- “Two Faces Have I” Lou Christie (1963)
- “It Takes Two” Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston (1965)
- “Two of Us” The Beatles (1970)
- “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” Meatloaf (1977)
- “Two Hearts” Bruce Springsteen (1980)
- “Just The Two Of Us” Grover Washington, Jr. (1981)
- “Two of a Kind, Workin’ on a Full House” Garth Brooks (1991)
