Most of your residents remove calendars from their walls at the beginning of each new year, toss them in the trash, and put up new ones. Not so fast! This year, I hope you’ll invite your residents to repurpose their calendars into greeting cards.
I think January is the perfect time to get residents together for card-making parties, and here’s why. Lots of organizations send out greeting cards to brighten the holidays for lonely people. But, here’s the problem. After Christmas, the cards abruptly end and they don’t start up again until Valentine’s Day.
Depending on the weather where a person lives, January can feel long, cold, and sometimes even depressing. Many people would cherish a pretty greeting card with an encouraging message at this time of year.
Last January, a woman donated a stack of calendars to the library where my sister works. At that point, everyone who wanted a calendar already had one hanging on their wall. So, I eagerly snatched up the leftovers. Over the past year, I’ve had so much fun repurposing the calendars into pretty greeting cards.
In the photo at the top of this post, you can see an example of some of the easiest cards I created out of calendars. However, your cards can also be a lot more elaborate. Check out these greeting card ideas from thekimsixfix.com.
These are a few of the many organizations that will welcome your residents’ greeting cards in January:
- Other nursing homes
- VA hospitals
- Hospice centers
- Meals On Wheels
- Children’s hospitals
- Deployed military
- Cancer centers
Of course, when you create your own greeting cards, they don’t come with envelopes. That’s often not a problem; many organizations will distribute cards without envelopes. However, if you need them, you can make your own with this pattern found on homespunseasonalliving.com. Or, you can purchase them in bulk at reasonable prices on Amazon.
