Each month I do a lot of research to discover the best fundraising ideas to share with my readers. In the process, I’m always amazed by the unique and creative events nursing homes come up with to raise money to benefit their residents.
Today I’m sharing a few of the more unusual fundraising ideas I’ve come across. I’ll also post a link to each organization so you can contact them directly if you want more information.
The Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, Iowa has hosted several I-Rides over the years. These events raise money for specific projects at their nursing home such as the remodeling of their bathing spas. I-Rides involve motorcycles and other vehicles joining together for a scenic drive through beautiful areas of Iowa and Wisconsin.
Funds are raised through entry fees, sponsorships, and donations. Participants enjoy breakfast and lunch, goody bags, a T-shirt, and door prize drawings.
Okay, this one goes way beyond my comfort zone, but I want to share the idea because it’s so unique. Brendoncare in the UK hosts an annual firewalk to raise money to enhance the quality of elders’ lives.
For the equivalent of about $20, participants have the opportunity to walk barefoot across a bed of burning hot embers. Friends and family are free to watch and cheer for the participants.
Before the walk, an experienced firewalker provides a thorough training session. Participants receive a T-shirt and a certificate to celebrate their accomplishment.
UPMC in Pennsylvania produces delightful calendars featuring residents photographed in the roles of popular movie and TV characters. Sales of the calendars support a Benevolent Care Fund to help residents who have depleted their financial resources. Check out this fun YouTube video to see a photography session in action.
Episcopal Retirement Services in Cincinnati, Ohio hosted an “Over The Edge 4 Elders” event to help raise money for affordable senior housing. The event featured celebrities and other people rappelling down a 10-story historic building.
Participants raised money through individual sponsorships. Employees could also donate money to see their favorite boss go down the building.
Now it’s your turn! Please contact me (nursinghomevolunteer@gmail.com) and let me know about successful fundraisers you do at your nursing home. I’ll be happy to share them with my readers in future months.
