How are you and your residents coming along with your Acts of Kindness for this year? It’s always exciting when someone tells me they tried one of the suggestions!
If you happened to miss the list for May, you can find it on this page. So, here we go for the month of June:
1. In many communities, nursing home residents volunteer to listen to children read during the summer months. This helps kids maintain or improve their reading skills over their school break. Check with local elementary schools for details.
2. Invite your residents to write encouraging poems on pretty cards. Then send someone out to place the cards on the windshields of employees’ cars in the parking lot.
3. Did you know that you can turn plastic bags into sleeping mats for homeless folks? Residents at Three Pillars are experts at this project, so you can contact them for details and instructions.
4. Call your local Ronald McDonald House and ask if they participate in the Cookies From The Heart program. Then send a small group of residents to the house to bake cookies for the families who are staying there.
5. Most animal shelters need old, thick towels. Check with your local shelters, then host a week-long towel collection drive.
6. Have you followed this series of posts since the beginning? Then your residents have done a lot of good things for other people. This month, talk with your residents about the importance of being kind to themselves, too. Ask them to brainstorm ideas for self-care.
7. Decorate tissue (Kleenex) boxes and distribute them to another unit of the nursing home.
Someone recently asked if there’s a master list where they can find all of the Acts of Kindness suggestions I’ve posted so far. At this point, they’re all included under the activity idea tab. However, at the end of 2019, I plan to choose my favorites and create a printable form for all of you!
