Basket of colorful handmade bookmarks

Over the past several months, I’ve been sharing my at-home volunteer projects with my readers. These projects have been such a blessing to me since I’m not able to get out of the house a lot during my cancer treatments.

I love to share my projects with you because I know they will be of interest to many of the residents in your senior living communities. And, you might also enjoy doing them as an individual or a family.

Most of this month’s activities involve creating greeting cards. Consider scheduling one or more of these projects for World Card Making Day. It’s coming up on the first Saturday in October, which falls on October 1 in 2022.

Military Missions

My first project for September was writing thank-you notes to our troops. Military Missions specializes in making and sending care packages to deployed military personnel. They need lots of volunteers to create notes to include in the packages. You can choose from a few options:

  • Write notes in store-bought cards
  • Use printable cards from their website
  • Create homemade cards
  • Use printable coloring pages from their website
  • Write personal letters

I did the printable coloring pages. The top half of the page is a patriotic picture to color, and there’s space at the bottom to write a brief thank-you message.

When I feel wiped out from my cancer treatments, I enjoy doing adult coloring pages. It helps me feel productive without being too exhausting. Perhaps some of your residents feel that way, too.

Bring Smiles To Seniors

Last week I created homemade cards for Bring Smiles To Seniors. They deliver cards to senior living communities, home-bound seniors, and participants in Meals on Wheels programs.

You can write encouraging notes in your cards. Or you can leave them blank, and other volunteers will write the notes for you.

I hope you’ll check their website to see the list of senior communities in your state who currently receive cards. (It surprised me to see the large number of places involved in the program!) You can also request to have cards sent to your community.

The Confetti Foundation

Would you like to do something else besides make cards? Then you’ll want to check out my third volunteer project for the month.

As you can see in the picture at the top of the post, this week I’m making bookmarks for an organization called The Confetti Foundation. They provide birthday party kits for children and teens who need to spend their birthdays in a hospital. The teen boxes include a book and a homemade bookmark.

You can check their website to see the hospitals taking part in their program. (I was pleased to see they include the local hospital where I go for my cancer treatments.)

Send A Smile Today

My final project for September will involve making cards for Send A Smile Today. They send encouraging cards to people of all ages with any type of cancer all over the USA.

I remember the preciousness of every card I received from family and friends early on my cancer journey. But most of the cards stopped coming as my treatment dragged on for many months. So, I appreciate that Send A Smile Today continues to send cards monthly as long as requested.

You can use either store-bought or handmade cards. The site offers suggestions of what to write inside.

Now, I need your ideas. What other at-home volunteer projects do you recommend?
